Caroline Amstutz
Research Lead, Matter Design
Caroline Amstutz is a multidisciplinary designer with a commitment to craftsmanship. They received a Master of Architecture from MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning, focusing their studies on fabrication, material culture, and ecological knowledge. During their time at MIT, Caroline held various teaching and research assistant appointments, and received the Sydney B. Karofsky '37 Prize. Caroline is also a graduate of Washington University’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual where they earned a B.S. in Architecture with a Fine Arts minor, and were awarded the college’s top honor, the Frederick Widmann Prize.
As a Research Lead at Matter Design, Caroline advances architectural experimentation, from design and deep-time speculations to prototyping and computation. They bring hands-on experience from positions across academia, research, industry, and fabrication settings, blending technical precision with a sensitivity to contextual nuance. Driven by curiosity, Caroline relishes design challenges at the intersection of material, ecology, and culture.
